Summary: Before John Cabot reached the east coast of Canada in 1497, millions of First Nations peoples already lived there. Thousands of years earlier, their ancestors had crossed the Bering Land Bridge into North American and spread across the continent. Before the first Europeans began to cross the Atlantic, the First Nations had developed hundreds of complex societies, varying widely with the terrain of each culture. Some lived settled lives in villages, while others hunted nomadically, following the caribou or buffalo herds.
